Our Story

The creator of WONDERMALS 'Animal Rhymes for Growing Minds,' Philip Gray has loved animals from a young age and has always enjoyed making children laugh and seeing others smile. With his humorous wit, love of rhyme and passion for heartfelt storytelling, he started creating animal rhyming poems for young children in 2015.

As the rhyming poems developed, Philip introduced subtle life-lessons for young readers into each poem which would help to inspire confidence, acceptance, kindness, friendship and a sense of fun. Each poem has a special meaning and this allows parents and guardians to discuss feelings and emotions with their child, which should foster open and honest communication and self-awareness from a young age.

'Animals are such a wonderful medium to use as they are so innocent and loveable.'

Once the early poems were written, Philip searched for an illustrator who could bring his animal characters to life. Thankfully, he found the work of a fantastic young illustrator who had been showcasing her artwork online. Diana Balta was from Romania and she was a new illustrator who wanted to realise her childhood dream. In late 2024, Philip and Diana started working on their first book together: WONDERMALS, and their styles matched perfectly from the very beginning.

With three books already completed, work will soon start on WONDERMALS 4.

We hope you can all enjoy our work.

But the one who had fun was the blind chimpanzee.

The Clumsy Camel

This camel is the clumsiest animal of them all. He bumps and knocks and trips and falls, all of the time, even at the circus.

This crazy clumsy camel has two large hairy humps,

And even in the desert into everything he bumps,

A prickly sticky cactus causes itchy scratchy lumps,

But camel laughs and lifts his leg . . .

. . . and then his bottom 'trumps!'

The Cold Polar Bear

Poor polar bear was left all alone in the snow but when he meets a frozen seal pup, a great act of kindness changes his life forever.

He had to be brave and set out to explore,

Deep snow he pushed down with his cold heavy paw,

And through the ice water at fish he would claw,

Before biting their heads with his chattering jaw.

My Cat With A Hat

This scruffy old cat prowls around the house in his new hat and he makes a very shrewd decision when he catches a greedy mouse.

The scared mouse stops, with fear in its eyes,

And looks up at the cat who was ten times his size,

What happened next was a total surprise,

As my cat with his hat showed he's kind and he's wise.

The Duck Who Couldn't Swim

Poor duck never learnt to swim like his friends, but after meeting a wise swan the most wonderful natural event occurs that changes his life on the lake forever.

Never did I ever, did I never ever think,

That I would see a tiny duck, its beak all bright and pink,

An ugly duck with ugly feet, big eyes that did not blink,

And when it took to water, all he ever did was sink.

The Lion And The Iron

Lion loves to dance and sing whilst ironing and he likes everything neat and tidy but he soon learns that some dangers are never far away.

He was after all, just a large and furry cat,

With furry paws, a furry jaw and a belly round and fat,

A tail that danced behind him, it swished this way and that,

But he was happy ironing clothes to make them nice and flat.

A 'Leaf Ant'

How can a tiny ant be as strong and mighty as the largest animal? Well, it's all about inner-strength, and this powerful ant proves we should never judge by appearances.

How is it an ant so small can carry bits of wood?

A leaf so large he carries it's a wonder how he could?

He looks so very tiny, as all ants probably should,

But the strength of this small 'leaf ant' is rarely understood.

Crocodile Smile

This handsome crocodile loves to brush his teeth and keep them clean but he also loves sweet treats, and a nagging pain in his back tooth threatens to ruin his smile forever.

This crocodile would always brush his teeth to keep them clean,

And even in the swamp he would have his own routine,

He'd brush and scrub and rinse and floss and polish in between,

He had the widest, brightest smile the world had ever seen.

The Wonky Donkey

Poor donkey was treated badly until one day he had an accident which caused his ankle to bend. Could this damaged 'wonky' donkey ever be useful again?

He worked so hard to please them and he hardly ever ate,

But side to side he went as his legs would not walk straight,

He knew he had to push himself or it may seal his fate,

But other donkey's reached the top, whilst he was always late.

Acrobat Sloth

This brave little sloth knows she has a talent and she dazzles in an audition when the West End show rolls into town, showing that with belief and by overcoming fear, anything is possible.

She used to climb up trees as passers-by would stop and stare,

Smiling as she climbed so high she didn't seem to care,

Then swinging on a branch she went flying through the air,

The wind and breeze it felt so good blowing through her hair.

The Clever Dog

When a small girl is left alone with no friends in the world, a tiny dog approaches her one day and through his care and protection they form the most wonderful unique bond of friendship.

This dog was very clever, the smartest little hound,

He looked up at the girl who was staring at the ground,

He pushed his nose towards her hand sniffing all around,

Then lay his head upon her lap, he didn't make a sound.
